Being frugal has practically become a way of life for many of us and nearly everybody has had to tighten their spending belts these past few years and having fun seems to be the hardest hit for those who are attempting to be practical. There are plenty of options for having fun and being creative without it costing much. Whether it is a craft, dining out, or a practical hobby such as growing a vegetable garden in your back yard, you can spend your time having fun at little or no cost.

Gardening Hobbyists can “do their thing” for little or no $$

If you don’t already have a hobby, a fun pastime that allows you to be creative while having fun, get one. It can be as simple as back yard gardening which can even turn into a money making business if you have the space to grow lots of seasonal veggies and fruits. Seeds are very affordable and many can be found for free. Look for them on places such as eBay and swap with others for variety. Small spaces can be utilized with container planting and the whole idea is to have fun without making it into a chore so do not plant more than you can handle if it all needs to be harvested at once. You save money at the grocery store because you have grown your own tomatoes, lettuce, beans, and carrots. This is not only economical it can be safer growing your own foods. Freeze your extras for another day and enjoy the fruits of your labor all year round.

Read any good books lately?

Every city has a public library and lots of books to be borrowed for free. Keep up with the latest fiction novels for a frugal way to pass the time. Check out online book sales or swap with others when you have read your copy, exchange it for another. This can be a really good way to meet people who have similar interests. Read the novel then go see the movie for double the fun. Afternoon movie matinees are cheap and a really cool place to hang out on hot summer afternoons.

Shop on the web, it’s cheaper

Instead of going to your local mall and spending hundreds on retail items, check out the shopping on the internet. Not only is it more convenient, you will save tons of money by shopping online. There are a lot of merchants selling the same items, so the law of supply and demand leans in your favor. You can also apply online coupon codes to make prices even lower. The only disadvantage that I see shopping online is that you cannot see and feel what you are buying; however, you get a ton of information when other users review a product and tell you whether to buy it or not.

Learn to bake or cook gourmet style

Everyone has to eat and most of us in fact, absolutely love it! Having the ability to creatively make meals that your guests will applaud you for can be a hobby that is not only fun but practical as well. You save money by making things such as cakes, pies, and gourmet meals from scratch instead of eating out or buying ready made. Learning to cook is a creative way to make new friends and impress those you already have. Family will appreciate your new found hobby because they get to try out your recipes as you are enjoying the fun of baking, grilling, sautéing, frying, stir frying, or whatever you choose. The fun part is in being creative and letting your imagination decide what you want to make next. The list of ingredients need not be expensive; in fact many gourmet type meals are seasoned merely with salt and pepper.

Frugal crafting can become profitable

Crafts like making jewelry, sewing, entering sweepstakes, and photography can be fun, creative, and extremely frugal. You make your own clothing or jewelry and not only save money but show off your creative side as well. You will also be able to make gifts for others. Taking photographs, especially with a digital camera, can be fun and even profitable if you catch that perfect moment and sell it. Take surveys for cash or gifts and you will find a way of contributing your opinion and getting free “stuff”. Enter those contests and win prizes or even cash money. Look for sweepstakes listings on the internet or at your local super market, hardware stores, and even drug stores. They may offer a new car or cash money and someone will win it, so it might as well be you, right? Someone wins those sweepstakes or lottery drawings so why not increase your odds by entering. You may be one of only a few who actually do enter. Being frugal and having fun go quite well together with just a little imagination.
