Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps isn’t a mainstream soap brand. You are not likely to see a commercial featuring this soap amidst your favorite television programming. It has, however, been around for many years. Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps soaps truly are an all in-one-soap. They can be used for everything from face and body wash to household cleaner.
Coming from a Jewish family that had been making soaps in Germany since 1858, Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps was brought to America in 1948. The company had a small following until the 1960’s when soap sales started to go up. Marketed mainly by word of mouth and sold in health food stores, Dr. Bronner’s became one of the top selling soap brands in America.
The pure castile soap made by Dr. Bronner’s is an all natural soap. It is never tested on animals, completely vegan, certified organic, and also biodegradable. Even their bottles are now made out of post consumer waste and their bar wrappers are pure castile, making this soap a favorite among the health and eco conscious.
All the soaps are made from coconut, jojoba, and hemp oils. The bar soaps use sodium hydroxide to saponify the oils while the liquid soaps use potassium hydroxide. Both forms come in different scents such as Unscented Baby Mild, Peppermint, Lavender, Tea Tree, Almond, Eucalyptus, Citrus Orange, and Rose. The soaps do not contain foaming agents like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, but they do lather up a bit due to the coconut oil.
Being all natural, Dr. Bronner’s is a great soap for even those with sensitive skin. Use just a few drops on a washcloth and it can be used as a body wash. Or you can premix it with some water and keep a bottle of diluted soap in the shower. A little goes a long way here, so you can dilute down to ¼ soap to ¾ water. You can also use the same mixture as a gentle face wash. The Baby Mild is unscented, thus no added fragrances, and is perfect for those with really sensitive skin or allergies. The Peppermint scent can be refreshing and the Lavender scent soothing. The Tea Tree extract that is added to the Tea Tree scent is antibacterial and antiseptic, so this soap is good for acne or psoriasis prone skin.
The soap can also be used as hand soap. Keep some diluted solution in a pump bottle next to your sink. If you have a foaming pump bottle, you can use that instead for a nice foaming hand soap.
Dr. Bronner’s also makes a great shampoo. It can be used full strength but use a little at a time. As with skin disorders, the Tea Tree scent can possibly help with scalp dermatitis. And if you have sensitive skin, you may want to stick to the Baby Mild scent as a shampoo as well. If you have no skin disorders, sensitivities, or allergies, you can choose a scent based solely on what you like.
Believe it or not, Dr. Bronner’s can be used as a toothpaste too. Apply one or two drops on your toothbrush and use as an alternative to regular toothpaste. The Peppermint scent is especially good for this use. The Peppermint scent can also be used as a mouthwash. Add just a small amount of soap to a glass of water and swish it around in your mouth.
To use as a household cleaner, add one part Dr. Bronner’s soap to about 40 parts water. If you are needed it for a really heavy duty mess, go a little stronger, up to one part soap to 20 parts water. This solution can be used to floors, sinks, basically anywhere you would use a household cleaner. The soap can be used full strength on tough, greasy jobs. You can also add some baking soda to the cleaner for scrubbing power. The soap can be used as laundry detergent too. Just add up to 1/3 cup of soap to a regular sized load. For a carpet stain remover, put a drop or two on a damp towel and use as a spot cleaner.
Other than the traditional body and household cleaning uses, Dr. Bronner’s soaps can be used for a few other things as well. It can be used to control pests on plants. Using the Peppermint scented soap, mix one tablespoon soap with ½ a gallon of water. Put in a spray bottle and spray the underside of the leaves of your plants. It can also be used as a pet shampoo. Just use the same ratio as you would use for your own shampoo.
Water down, Dr. Bronner’s can be used as a vegetable or fruit rinse, bubble bath, shaving lather, or to clean makeup brushes.
For just about anything that calls for soap or some sort or cleaning power, Dr. Bronner’s can do the job. This soap has been around for many years, and truly is an all-in-one product. From washing your face and body, to cleaning the floors and laundry, to getting rid of insects, Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps can do it.
